ARE YOU AS OPTIMIZED AS YOU THINK?
MY SMARTWATCH constantly dings with cheerful congratulations for steps taken, heart rate achieved, days rested to speed up my recovery. My shelves, meanwhile, groan with helpful books, my phone with apps, and my counter with supplements that promise to remedy any deficiency that might inhibit my peak human performance. So why, if my life is so optimized, do I feel so…meh? Maybe optimization—a trend that rose concurrently with our ability to track our body’s data—isn’t so optimal. We tend to overvalue what we can measure and undervalue the immeasurable. Yet much of what makes life meaningful and keeps us mentally healthy is not so easily captured in metrics. (See: There’s no tracking ring for contentment.) We worked with top mental wellness experts to ID what all our meters might be…
Are You Dysregulated?
She begins by moving her shoulders. Next, she starts swinging her arms, so that her limbs resemble a pendulum. She gyrates her hips, kicks out her legs and rotates her neck until her body is in the kind of full, wild flow that might encourage a passer-by to call for help. Aside from her unruly movements, the mom-of-one on screen looks put together, with a Pinterest board-worthy blonde fringe and on-trend wide-legged jeans; a well-watered and docile dog in her background. But her toddler simply won’t stop screaming. The solution? Shaking out her body, she tells her TikTok audience, in a video viewed almost 1m times, tagged #nervoussystemregulation. Regulators Round Up TikTok is positively reverberating with the belief that ‘regulating’ your nervous system is the key to optimum well-being, with…
Is Tadpole Water Good For Your Gut?
TikTok Trend Alert The latest TikTok nutrition trend – chia seeds in water, plus a squeeze of lemon – got its name from the resemblance between the soaked seeds and frog larvae. But should you try it? Chia seeds provide more weight-for-weight protein than an egg and contain all nine essential amino acids, making them one of the richest plant-based sources of heart-healthy omega-3 fatty acids. There’s also evidence to suggest chia seeds may help lower blood pressure and levels of ‘bad’ cholesterol. This is likely because chia seeds are especially high in fibre, more so than most other foods (just 2 Tbsp contains 6g, a fifth of your daily recommended amount). Fibre has many health benefits and chia seeds contain a type of fibre that swells, causing it to…
Train Your Brain To Truly Enjoy Exercise
Truth: they woke up like this. Some people really are more inclined to find joy in exercise. But! You can rewire your brain to join that ‘love it’ group, research shows. When experts measured the electrical connectivity in the brains of people who are recreationally active, they found that those who perceive themselves as being highly tolerant of physical effort had greater levels of “remembered pleasure” afterward, according to a 2024 study by Florida International University. Meanwhile, those who said they were not as tolerant had a certain amount of “anticipatory dread”, or negative feelings, before the work even started. The good news is that you can teach yourself to be more accepting, physically and mentally, of movement – which will help you feel excited about exercise in general and…

‘My friend’s death proves we need better maternal mental health support’
I was feeding my four-month-old son when my phone lit up with the life-shattering message: ‘I don’t know how to say this and I can’t believe I’m writing this, but Sophie died this morning.’ The message was from the husband of one of my best and most brilliant friends. When I called, he confirmed that Sophie had taken her own life. Her daughter was 10 weeks old. I’d first met my curious, smart friend 20 years earlier on a plane to Moscow. We were travelling as part of a programme to teach English abroad and from those early encounters, we were inseparable. Sophie had a sense of adventure I deeply respected; her drive to explore new ideas and places was an extension of her desire to learn. Not all friendships…
FACTORY RESET
PRESIDENT DONALD TRUMP HAS SAID HE WANTS TO return the United States to a “golden age” of manufacturing and is trying to force the issue for many industries by slapping high tariffs on foreign products. However, their implementation, marked by abrupt shifts, pauses and fluctuations in levies, has sparked instability across the U.S. economy, as well as rattled global markets and longstanding partnerships. To some, like former Trump White House adviser Steve Bannon, the initial disruption is the path to a “robust,” “hegemon-like,” “reindustrialized” America—one that promises to put tens of thousands back to work in well-paying manufacturing jobs. Others, like Colin Grabow, associate director at the Cato Institute’s Herbert A. Stiefel Center for Trade Policy Studies, argue the entire premise of reshoring and reindustrialization is flawed, as American manufacturing…
Taylor Swift & Blake Lively: Inside the Drama That ‘Halted’ Their Friendship
Is it bad blood? As Blake Lively’s legal war with her It Ends With Us director-costar Justin Baldoni rages on, insiders say her longtime relationship with Taylor Swift is not what it once was. “Their friendship has halted,” says a source close to Swift, 35, who is godmother to the actress’s daughters. “Taylor wants no part in this drama.” Another says that Lively, 37, and the pop superstar—who was sent a subpoena by Baldoni’s lawyers on May 9—are indeed “taking some space” but insists that they are “not no longer friends.” Swift was first pulled into the legal battle—which began in December when Lively sued Baldoni, 41, alleging sexual harassment and a retaliatory smear campaign (Baldoni has denied her claims)—when he countersued the Gossip Girl alum and her husband, Ryan Reynolds,…
Courtroom Circus
who’s news Following a harrowing few days in the stand, Cassie Ventura’s husband, Alex Fine, praised her for showing “strength and bravery” as she testified against ex Sean “Diddy” Combs while just days away from giving birth to their child. “There has been speculation online surrounding how it must feel for me to sit there and listen to my wife’s testimony,” a statement from Fine read. “I have felt so many things sitting there. I have felt tremendous pride and overwhelming love for Cass.” Combs, 55, was arrested last September and is on trial for racketeering, sex trafficking and transportation to engage in prostitution. If found guilty, he faces spending life in prison. Ventura, 38, was forced to discuss the most difficult days of her life in front of a…
The rewired generation: Smartphones and the youth mental health crisis
I’d be worried about our teenagers. Mental health problems such as depression, anxiety and behavioral issues are rife in the age group, affecting one in seven teenagers aged 10–19. Most cases go undiagnosed and untreated, and tragically suicide is the third major cause of death among the young. Rates of mental health problems in teenagers have increased 40 percent in the last 10 years alone although levels had been stable throughout the previous century. Some have blamed the sudden rise on the forced social isolation of Covid lockdowns, and this may have exacerbated the problem. But mounting evidence points to the overuse of smartphones, and scientists are beginning to agree. Social psychologist Jonathan Haidt describes it as a “rewiring of the teenage brain” that began around 2015, when the smartphone…

Easy ways to plant fruit
Edge borders with fruit A sunny border is a great place to grow fruit. Strawberries – both tiny alpines or those with larger summer fruits – are perfect as border edgings, as are step-over apples and pears, which act like a low-growing fruiting hedge. Halfstandard or other free-standing forms of fruit tree can be grown in a border. Another way to add height is to grow scrambling plants up a tree stake. The compact blackberry ‘Loch Maree’, with its large, glossy berries, or a goldenfruited raspberry, would look striking among perennials. There’s a wide range of delicious fruiting plants to choose from, of all shapes and sizes. In addition to their sweet, juicy harvests, many also offer flowers or structural interest. So get creative and put your fruit centre stage.…
